We woke up at 4am to make the two hour drive to the top of Haleakala Crater to see the sunrise. It was very chilly at the 10,000 foot summit (40 something degrees), but the sunrise was breathtaking. Here are the beginning colors starting show along the horizon.
Later that morning we rode horses down into the crater. The trail was very steep in parts and I felt bad for the horses. It was a little scary at some of the downhill, narrow, rocky parts of the trail. We ate lunch down inside the crater and then began the 2 hour ride back up.
We all had sore bottoms the next day.
